Settings for SMTP mail feeds
Our mail platform will automatically support the handling of mail for any domains which Opal run on behalf of our customers. Please check where dns is managed for the domain you wish to configure to use Opal backupmx service. If it is NOT run by Opal, contact Opal support (support@opal-solutions.com) to arrange for the domain to be permitted through the backupmx platform.
Your domains MX records should be set as follows:
For customers who require an SMTP mail feed, primary MX records should be pointed to your own mail server, and the secondary MX record should point to backupmx.opal-solutions.com. For example:
- TYPE = MX preference = 10 CNAME = mail.yourserver.com
- TYPE = MX preference = 20 CNAME = backupmx.opal-solutions.com
For customers who have any special configuration on servers or firewalls based on our older platforms IP addresses, you will need to adjust your configuration to include the following IP ranges:
- 195.74.130.0/24
- 195.74.128.0/24
- 195.12.4.0/24
Note: Mail will not be accepted if the primary MX record is pointing to backupmx.opal-solutions.com. These servers should only be used as the lowest priority MX records.
If customers have settings for SMTP domains which are not hosted by Opal and wish to use the backup MX server, you will need to send the domain name through to the Opal support team so that we can allow the domain to be relayed through the Opal backup MX servers. Once you have received confirmation that this has been added, you can make the necessary DNS changes, as described above.
For customers migrating to this service who have had to make changes to firewall of mailserver configuration files, we recommend checking to make sure that your mail server have not become an open mail relay. To assist with these checks, please use our open relay check service available here.
