Equal opportunities policy

Opal is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to a policy of treating all of its employees equally. This means that it is the policy of the company to take all reasonable steps to employ and promote staff based on their abilities and qualifications without regard to their race, national origin, colour, religion, sex, age, disability, or sexual orientation.

Types of discrimination

Direct discrimination is treating a person on one or more of these grounds less favourably than others are or would be treated in the same or similar circumstances.

Indirect discrimination is the introduction of a condition or requirement, which although applied to all, is such that a member of another group could not comply with it and can not be shown to be justifiable.

Role of staff

Employees must co-operate with the employer to ensure that this policy is effective to ensure equal opportunities and to prevent discrimination. Any employee who is found to have committed an act of improper discrimination will face disciplinary action. Serious or repeated breaches will be treated as gross misconduct.

Any acts of discrimination should be reported to your line manager, or if they are the subject of the complaint, any other senior manager you feel comfortable with.

Employees should support colleagues who have suffered such treatment and have made a complaint.

The employer will not ignore or treat lightly grievances or complaints from members of a particular sex, racial group, or those of a certain class of disability, on the assumption that they are over-sensitive about discrimination.
